Common QnA

What should I bring with me?

For a fun day on the water at camp, everyone MUST bring a few things with them:

  • A PFD (personal floation device) or lifejacket that fits (we have a very limited quantity to lend out);

  • A FULL refillable water bottle (2 if you have a spare);

  • A packed nut free lunch (please NO NUTS!);

  • Water resistant sun screen;

  • A sun hat (inexpensive sunglasses are optional);

  • Shoes that can get wet - no flip flops, old running shoes are inexpensive and work great, Crocs are ok, wetsuit shoes are good, Keens are good;

  • A swimsuit or swim shorts;

  • A sun shirt - long or short sleeve cotton t-shirt;

  • A rain jacket because we do get colder days in the summer;

  • A towel and a change of clothes;

  • Some extra clothing that is warm e.g. a sweater / hoodie and sweat / yoga pants.

Where are you located?

The camp can be reached by car, bike or bus. Please see the map below.

If coming by TTC to Cherry Beach you can take the 121C which runs from Union Station to Cherry Beach. Then, please allow a 15 minute walk along the bike path to our location on Regatta Road. Click here to check with TTC for the latest route information.

What time can I drop off and pick up?

We are a day camp. Our regular hours are 9 am to 3 pm for Wetfeet and Cansail 1/2 and 8:30 am to 3:30 pm for our Advanced CanSail 3-6 program. If you have sailors in the advanced program as well as the Wetfeet or Cansail 1/2 you can drop off and pick up all sailors at the advanced Cansail program times.

Your help in dropping off and picking up promptly at these times is appreciated as our staff have a good amount of work to do after each day of camp. Extended care is available at an additional cost. Please email jr.sailing@outerharbour.net for more information.

How do I access sailor’s CANSail checklist?

At the end of every session, instructors complete each sailor’s  CANSail level checklist. To limit paper use we no longer print each sailor’s checklist off, however, you can access these checklists through the Checklick website at https://app.checklick.com/

The username will either be the sailor’s  first and last name with no spaces in capital letters “FIRSTLAST” Or first and last name with no spaces, with only the first initial of each name in capitals “FirstLast”

The first time you log in, you will need to click the forgot password button to reset your password. This email will go to the email address entered when the sailor was registered. If someone else has registered the sailor, please email us at  jr.sailing@outerharbour.net so we can change the email associated with the account.

Please note that we aim to have each sailor’s checklist completed by Friday (this will be biweekly for the 2-week sessions), however, it may not be updated until Monday of the following week. This is to be expected during weeks that have high winds, rainy days or if sailors are close to passing.

Do you offer financial support to help young people attend your camp?

We do! We are a non-for profit camp with the goal of making sailing accessible to all. Last year we launched The Level the Playing Field initiative, which aims at breaking down the finical barrier to accessing sailing. We offer a limited amount of spots at a heavily discounted or cost free rate each summer. Please contact us by emailing jr.sailing@outerharbour.net to see how you or your organization can get involved.

What is your policy for rain days or thunderstorms?

Rain and Thunderstorm Policy:

1.    Thunderstorms: Following Sail Canada policy, we must wait 30 minutes after the last roll of thunder or sight of lightning before going out on the water. This is to ensure the safety of all our campers and staff.

2.    Light Rain: We will proceed with sailing in light rain if there is sufficient wind. Rest assured, we continuously monitor weather conditions to make informed decisions. Please send your sailors with rain gear if rain is forecasted.

3.    On-Land Activities: On days when we cannot sail due to heavy rain or thunderstorms, campers will stay on land. We utilize this time for a mix of on-land theory lessons and fun group activities. Theory lessons include topics like knot tying, parts of the boat, right of way, proper attire, and hypothermia prevention. These lessons are essential for their CanSail checklists and are highly beneficial.

4.    Sheltered Areas: During heavy rainfall, we optimize all our sheltered areas, spreading groups between the clubhouse, tents and clubhouse deck to keep everyone dry and comfortable.

5.    Engagement: While our goal is to keep campers engaged and entertained during on-land rain days, we acknowledge that the material can sometimes feel repetitive. We strive to make these sessions as engaging as possible.

6.    Optional Early Pick-Up or Home Stay: If you prefer, you are welcome to keep your children at home or pick them up early when sailing is not possible. However, we understand this may not be feasible for everyone, which is why the camp remains in session with a full team of staff to run activities, lessons.

7.    Make-Up Days or Reimbursements: As a non-profit organization, we cannot offer make-up days or reimbursements for missed days due to rain as these are out of our control and staff are still onsite.

8.    Bringing Games: We recommend sending your children with a board game or activity they can share with friends. While we have many games at the camp, donations of pre-loved games your family no longer uses are always welcome and greatly appreciated.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. We are here to ensure your children have a safe and enjoyable camp experience, rain or shine.
